POND

Welcome to Penguin Ponds!

Welcome to the Penguin Ponds new and improved web site.  Designed to load faster and present a little more information on watergardening with an emphasis on the keeping of koi in a bamboo setting. Penguin Ponds was started about 10 years ago with one 250 gallon pond  with 4 koi and 10 goldfish. It has grown to 3 ponds 9000 gallons of water and many koi 20 inches or more in length. The project has been a deep learning curve and I will try to share my experience with others.  The next aspect of Penguin Ponds became the Bamboo which was initially to provide a backdrop to the pond setting. But after exploring the standard garden outlets and given the standard answer "Do not plant bamboo its too invasive" I just had to explore further. There is a wealth of information,  like bamboo is edible , the plant is evergreen and ornamentally attractive all year, functions as a habitat for wildlife. The most important aspect is it functionality as a varied product over a 1000 items are made from it, and the electrical properties it has allowed it to be used as the first light bulb filament and currently IBM, MIT and NTT are using bamboo in semiconductor research. There is no other plant that contributes as much to civilization.
