Subject: Passing of Dr. Joan Shields

It is with profound sorrow that I write to inform you of the death of Professor Joan Shields, Professor Emerita and past Chair of the Chemistry Department at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. Joan completed her B.A. in Chemistry at Regis College, her M.S. in Chemistry at Tufts University, and her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Boston College. An organic chemist by training, she was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute in Mulheim, Germany, after completion of her graduate studies. Joan joined the faculty of Long Island University in 1968 as Assistant Professor of Chemistry. She served as Chair of the Chemistry Department for twenty years, and as Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Chemical society from 1995-1998—one of only two women to hold that position in the society’s 125-year history. Joan authored more than thirty publications in her field, including nine monographs. For this remarkable scholarly record, Joan was awarded the Trustees Award for a Lifetime of Scholarly Achievement in 2004. Even after her retirement as a full-time faculty member in 2007, Joan continued to work tirelessly on behalf of the student community, working closely with the freshman experience in College 101, and working as Chair of the Pre-Health Professions Advisement Committee. Joan Shields will be much missed by students, by staff, by faculty members. I know you will join me in offering our heartfelt condolences to Joan’s family.
