The Expression: Hello Michael, I was a classmate of Joan's and a carpool member with Joan for three years. I lived in Cambridge and knew your mother and Mrs Shields. I have many happy memories of our days riding to Regis. I spoke to Joan at our 50th reunion in 2006. But it was the first time that I had seen her in years. We had a good talk and she looked great. I am sorry about your loss. Remember the good times with her as I am. Sincerely, Ginny Clark Kristo

The Expression: These are my impressions and recollections of Joan Shields, a friend at CW Post for 30 years: Bright, honest, loyal, no nonsense. One always understood where one stood with Joan. No bedside manner here. Just the way I liked it. She was one of a kind. I miss her already. God rest her soul.

The Expression: Dr. Shields was my amazing mentor. Without her generosity and kindness I couldn't be in the United States, and I wouldn't be a chemist. She was tough and kind and wise at the same time. She would weigh the sodium hydroxide straight into her palm, no gloves. Her advice was candid and clear, always on point, but she was extremely patient and kind at the same time. Good chemistry is having a basic curiosity about matter. Good teaching is democratic and patient. Those are things I learned from Dr. Shields. As the joke goes, Old chemists never die - they just reach equilibrium. I wish you'd stuck around a bit longer, and I wish I'd stopped by more often. On graduation day I spaced out and missed the handing out of the diplomas. Dr. Shields was there on the stage, with my diploma in her hand, looking awkward. I got a bunch of flowers the next day. She thought it was funny. I will miss you very much. Deeply grateful. vlado
